Artist Alex Ross has an idea of what Brandon Routh’s Superman should look like in the Arrowerse’s upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Though the Arrowverse has staged many crossovers over the years, Crisis on Infinite Earths was the first time one was announced so far in advance, leading many to speculate it would be the biggest one yet. It’s since been revealed that Crisis on Infinite Earths will air over five nights this December and January, featuring all five Arrowverse shows: Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman.

Fans found out during San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that Routh will pull double duty as Ray Palmer and Superman during Crisis on Infinite Earths. Routh played Superman once before in 2006’s Superman Returns; whileTyler Hoechlin, the Arrowverse’s usual Superman, will play the character as well, confirming that alternate realities are a part of the crossover event. After the announcement, Routh admitted that he had a “mix of feelings” about playing Superman again, but ultimately felt it was “an opportunity … to kind of say hello and goodbye to the character in a way I didn’t get to the first time.” Routh revealed that he’ll play the Kingdom Come version of Superman.

Kingdom Come Superman is an alternate reality version of the well-known character. He made his first appearance in an Elseworlds miniseries written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Alex Ross. In that story, Lois Lane is killed by the Joker, leading Superman to leave the superhero life for many years. Wonder Woman convinces him to rejoin the Justice League, and the two eventually become romantically involved. Since the Elseworlds miniseries, Kingdom Come Superman has featured in a number of other comics. Ross shared his idea of what Routh’s version might look like on Twitter. Check out the image below:

SDCC 2019, as well as the days following, brought a flurry of announcements regarding Crisis on Infinite Earths. Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim shared that the event will begin with “the destruction of various parallel universes” and that they want to show “seminal moments” from the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic. It was also revealed that LaMonica Garrett, who plays the Monitor, will play the evil Anti-Monitor as well. And, in addition to Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane will return for the crossover. Fans can also look forward to seeing Lois and Clark’s child for the first time.

There’s a lot riding on Crisis on Infinite Earths, especially because it’s occurring near the end of Arrow’s final season. However, the news from Comic-Con shows that there is a lot for fans to be excited about, too, especially with Routh’s dual role. After watching him play the Atom for many seasons on both Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, it will be fun to see him play someone different. Plus, it’s been over a decade since Routh last played Superman, making it the perfect time to suit up once again - this time in the Arrowverse.
