Alyson Hannigan has given her blessing for the up-and-coming Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival and would consider coming back, as long as Joss Whedon stays on board. Since the reboot announcement in July, speculation has flown as to what fans can expect to see for the newest installment, which is still in the very early stages of development.
Although the original series has carried on in comic book form since the show ended in 2003, executive producer and showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen has since clarified that there is no intention to replace or replicate the characters from that iteration of the show. Rather, the show will see a new Slayer with friends, foes, and battles of her own.
As far as seeing Buffy, Willow, Xander, and the gang goes, Alyson Hannigan mused on the idea in an interview with E! News. She said:
In the same interview, Hannigan was asked about Alexis Denisof’s (her husband) potential return. The actor played Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, the bumbling but sweet Watcher, who was introduced in the third season of Buffy and went on to become a regular for the series spinoff, Angel. With an original cast made up of so many unforgettable characters, Hannigan did not understate how daunting the task of getting fans to fall in love with new ones will be.
“I have no idea. I feel like it’s far down the road. But we’ll see. As long as Joss is involved, it’ll be good. I’m sure.”
When last seen, Willow, one of the most powerful witches in the world, brought her redemption storyline to a close, after she nearly destroyed the world following the murder of her girlfriend Tara, played by Amber Benson. Having finally surmounted an addictive over-reliance on magic, Willow changed the world by awakening dormant Slayers everywhere, thus ending the endless burden shouldered by Buffy Summers through the ancient ordinance: “one girl in all the world.” If a new generation of witches were to appear in the new series, it wouldn’t be unimaginable to see Willow mentoring them in a Dumbledore-like role.
“I feel like the old show would still hold up. At least that’s what people keep telling me. Now the fans of the show and their children are watching, so we have a whole other generation. I just hope that it’s as good as ours was. Ours is always going to be my favorite.”
James Marsters, who played the vampire villain turned anti-hero Spike, also recently expressed interest in returning to Buffy, with the stipulation of Whedon’s involvement. Interviews with cast, notably for the show’s 20-year anniversary in 2017, have demonstrated that they’re still close, and wanting Whedon to remain part of the creative force is only natural. Shows like Doctor Who, 90210, and Sailor Moon Crystal have shown that bringing former cast members into new adaptations can pay off with fans, so long as some essence of original shows stay intact. For now, it’s a matter of waiting to see where and with whom the fight takes place in life after Sunnydale.
