The Amazing Race Season 31 winners Colin Guinn and Christie Woods recently explained in an interview why they’ve never gotten married after all these years. They were runners-up of Season 5 of the show in 2004 and got engaged on national TV shortly after, and fans have been wondering why they haven’t had a wedding yet.

Guinn, a tech entrepreneur, and Woods, an integrated sex, love, and relationship coach, came in as the runners-up of Season 5 of The Amazing Race in 2004. Shortly after the finale of their season aired on CBS, they got engaged when Guinn proposed to Woods; and while fans were thrilled for the couple, they never imaged that 15 years later they still wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on the wedding. Many viewers assumed the pair were married when they returned to The Amazing Race to compete once again in Season 31, which was made up of an all-star cast of contestants from previous seasons of The Amazing Race and other reality shows like Big Brother and Survivor.

Guinn and Woods, who have lived together in Austin, Texas for many years and share two sons, Achilles and Cruz, recently revealed in an interview with Reality TV World that even though they got engaged on television more than a decade ago, they still aren’t married and don’t have plans to get married any time soon. Guinn did admit the two were “technically engaged” after he proposed on The Early Show, and Woods said, “We are life partners,”

When pressed as to why they haven’t gotten married in the past decade, Woods admitted that she wasn’t a “big fan of the institution of marriage and just energetically what that sort of represents.” She went on to say she felt there was “programming dividing our culture” as to what marriage means and she didn’t want to contribute to that. Ultimately, Woods concluded, “I feel like your commitment is in your heart and, really, a piece of paper doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.” Her “fiancé” agreed, saying “You should be earning it every day.” While Guinn and Woods might not be legally married, they are “common law wed in Texas,” Woods said, considering they’ve been living together for a certain extended period of time.

Fans saw a much more chill, zen version of Guinn and Woods this year than they did on Season 5, when they’d regularly snip at each other during competitions. In the interview, the two seemed blissfully happy with their current relationship status - and they’re likely a lot happier now that they’re taking home the $1 million prize after winning Season 31 of The Amazing Race. The best part is they don’t have to worry about putting any of that money toward a wedding.
